Trident Maple
The Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) is known for its glossy, three-lobed leaves. Even in times of drought, this small- to medium-sized tree native to China and Japan is able to keep its leaves green until late autumn when they turn yellow, orange, and red. Although its leaves may not draw the eye in the same capacity as most other Japanese Maples, once the leaves drop in autumn the exfoliating bark uncovers the orange and brown inner bark, giving it a stately appearance in the bleak winter months.
The Trident Maple grows at a moderate rate, and is a good street, patio, or lawn tree due to its hardiness and resilience. It can also be cultivated as a bonsai. Requires full sun (at least six hours a day) and grows best in acidic, well-drained soils, but is quite tolerant to many soil types.
